the official unemployed girl watchlist (part 1)
for people like me with too much time on their hands in a tough part of life
oh my god, sam’s talking about not having a job again, shut up!!!
no! i will not!
watching movies has become a hobby of mine since i lost my job, i initially made a goal back in december that i would watch 100 movies this year and after i got laid off it made me want to watch way more. i’ve also been watching a lot of TV, films’ reactionary cousin.
something about film and TV is that it can be very healing when you watch things at just the right time in your life. if i had watched some of these things earlier in my life when i had a stable job, or when i was a student, they probably wouldn’t have resonated as much with me. so without further ado, here’s the official unemployed girl watchlist. i will create new editions of this when new ideas come to me. enjoy!
girls
i started watching girls immediately after i got laid off. i watched it every single day and finished it within two weeks because i saw myself so much in it (unfortunately). hannah being precariously employed from the start and throughout made it extremely easy for me to see myself in her character, and everyone else’s struggles with relationships, substances, family, friends, work, and creativity were so deeply relatable to current me and past me. it’s the sort of thing i’m glad i watched when i was 25 and not when i was 15 because it wouldn’t have made sense to me as much as it does now, having gone through so much more.
