last friday, the legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom came out and it’s been all i can think about most of the time. so because of this, this weeks newsletter is going to be about things i love about the game so far. this will contain possible minor spoilers, but i’m still very early in the game, so there’s not a lot here that you wouldn’t figure out about in the first 5 hours of playing.
it’s similar enough to breath of the wild, but different enough too
the great thing about tears of the kingdom (which i will now refer to as TotK) is that it bears enough resemblance to its predecessor in storyline, breath of the wild (BotW), but not so much that it’s boring. many of the mechanics are the same and don’t require adjusting or relearning, but the new abilities, the sky islands and caves and chasms, and the new storyline are refreshing enough that it doesn’t feel like i’m just playing BotW.
ascend
there’s nothing i love more than busting through the ceiling to get somewhere. especially if it’s several metres of solid rock.
no guardians
as much as i respect the sheikah and their technology, the guardians in BotW were absolutely terrifying to me. there’s something so unsettling about the design of all of the, and the laser attacks made me panic and i could simply never parry them, no matter how hard i tried. i love the new zonai constructs, and i’m excited for when i can finally manage to get a flux construct (i just call them zonai golems).
gloom hands
okay these things are fucking terrifying. but i love it because of that. it’s so fucked up!
helping koroks
i see you sick fucks blasting off koroks into space or literally crucifying them. i like being able to help them. i love koroks. it’s a cute addition.
all the shit you can build
i personally have been prioritizing exploring the map, getting shrines and skyview towers, and doing some side quests, but the possibilities of what you can build using ultrahand are absolutely wild to me. i saw a video of someone who built a trojan horse earlier this week and it just blew my mind.
the information you get from going back to link’s house in hateno village
i don’t want to spoil it. but go there and read the diaries. and go into the well. it made me really happy.
